The Weather Channel's take on the state of our dams; that is our Earthen Embankment Dams along the canal from Macedon to Buffalo.

We already know they have been classified as High Hazard Dams by Rizzo Engineering.

Here's what happens when these dams collapse due to inclement weather and static liquefaction of the soil in the dam.

Edenville Dam was built in the 1920s before geotechnical engineering and modern dam safety standards existed. Some Erie Canal Dams were built long before this, while others are about the same age. And its very obvious little was understood about earthen dam construction, as can be seen by the steep nature on the outboard slopes on canal dams.

We also know the soil was not compacted in layers, but merely dumped from tipping railroad cars full of soil.

So many things are wrong with Canal Embankment Dams that need addressing.
