FEMA’s Release of the Learning Content Management System (LCMS) Seepage and Internal Erosion Courses

 P-1032
The FEMA National Dam Safety Program worked with the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) to develop three courses based on FEMA P-1032, Evaluation of Monitoring of Seepage and Internal Erosion. These new courses are intended to provide dam owners, emergency response personnel and other stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to identify seepage and internal erosion within dams.

Course IS-0874, Introduction to Seepage and Internal Erosion and the Emergency Response to Seepage Related Dam Risks, is the first part of the three-part series. The course provides a basic level introduction to the concepts and implications of seepage and internal erosion and builds a foundation for private dam owners, local, state, tribal and territorial officials to understand seepage related dam risks.

The second course, IS-0875, Identifying, Monitoring, and Addressing Seepage and Internal Erosion at Dams, provides a basic level introduction to identify, monitor and address seepage and internal erosion at dams.

The third course, IS-0876, Evaluation and Analysis of Internal Erosion and Seepage Conditions at Dams, builds competency in the investigation and analysis of seepage and internal erosion at dams. It also builds a foundation for local emergency officials and engineers on seepage conditions as they pertain to risk-based systems.

The courses can be taken as an independent study or an instructor led training course. It takes approximately four to five hours to complete. Participants can answer practice questions at the end of each course before taking each individual course’s final exam. The courses do not grant a FEMA Dam Safety certificate, but EMI does offer 0.5 Continuing Education Units per course.

If interested in taking these courses, follow the instructions located on https://training.fema.gov/apply/ to register.
