While many people living near or using the NYS Canal System are concerned about when the Erie Canal will close for 2022, or when the NYPA will start clearing trees away from unsafe embankments again, the NYS Canal Corporation has been quietly going about the business of repairing issues with unsafe embankments and "reimagining" the 21st century Erie Canal, and improving access and safety to the Canal System.

This paperwork was filed in August 2022, to repair an embankment that is slipping, and could end up becoming an embankment breach if "nothing is done" to fix it. It is for an embankment INTEGRITY issue in Oneida County. You can follow the link below the image for more information.

This isn't the only Environmental Notice Bulletin regarding the Erie Canal that has been filed, here's another for the soon to be built Pedestrian Bridge in Brockport, that will join the SUNY College on the south side of the Erie, to the Empire Trail on the North Embankment. It's another project by NYPA's Reimagine Program that is raising eyebrows and causing some controversy locally.

So the big question is when will the NY State DEC release the NEW paperwork for the NYS Erie Canal Embankment Integrity Program?

That Canal Integrity program will pave the way for continued work on clearing 100s of miles of earthen canal embankments of invasive vegetation that has made the embankments unsafe, and has prevented proper dam inspection and maintenance for almost 100 years now. And that SEQR Filing will also mean that the NYS Canal Corporation has completed it's work on the Erie Canal Embankment Handbook, that will spell out exactly how embankments will be cleared, and why... which is for PUBLIC SAFETY, incase it wasn't apparent to some.

Normally these NYS Department of Environmental Conservation ENBs come out on Wednesdays, like today. The ECNA is fairly confident that the SEQR filing will be occurring in October, that is when the NYS Canal Corporation normally release their Environmental Notices for any work that will occur in the off-season along the Erie Canal.

Let's hope those few people in our community, who have opposed this safety work for 4 years, have finally come to their senses and will stop fighting against NY State efforts to correct longstanding public safety issues with these canal embankments, and a canal system in a state of dangerous disrepair.

Or maybe those social media miscreants will just ignore the safety warnings again, and ignore the safety of Erie Canal Neighbors living below the Canal Embankments.

That Facebook Group who's opposing canal improvements may once again ignore the safety of their neighbors & canal communities by saying that "shade" is MORE important than safety along the Canal, but the evidence, and common sense is against them, especially when the NYS DEC will support the NYS Canal Corporation, and the SAFETY of all NY Residents.

But the reality is that many in that Facebook Group simply don't care about their neighbors, or their community, or so it appears by their continued "indifference" to their own safety.

And all over the State there are SEQR determinations being made to actually remove MANY trees in other places... like along the Hudson River, part of the NYS Canal System.

As a matter of fact, you have to get a SEQR Environmental Review Negative Declaration to PLANT trees, even if they are replacing dead trees.

Because both REMOVAL and PLANTING of trees can have a detrimental affect on the environment, like planting trees on Earthen Embankments that retain water, where NYS does not approve of any vegetation growth but grass. Contrary to what some in our community insist is true, not all TREES are good for the environment, or for public safety.
