Hot off the press TODAY... and please see highlighted areas that clear up some "false facts" that have been floated about lately regarding the New York State Canal System.

FACT: It's called the Erie Canal... period. No name change, no hidden conspiracies.

FACT: The NY State Canal Corporation, the Erie Canal and the Canal Trail system are not funded by Taxpayers, but on profits from their new parent company, the New York Power Authority, and the generation & sale of electricity. The new owners of the property, NYPA, now decide what gets done with their assets to both preserve Erie Canal Integrity & Safety, and also understand how it helps to generate those needed profits to continue it's operation.

FACT: NYPA has a vision for the Erie Canal that is different than many of it's prior owners, and is working to Reimagine it for 21st century use. https://ecna.us/reimagine/

Expected behavior for a group that can't understand the need for Dam Maintenance, thinks Unsafe Erie Canal Embankment Dams are "fake news", and can't figure out they are fighting AGAINST public safety by trying to stop a Dam Safety Program.

Let's not forget, its the same group who says that "they" own the Erie Canal and have the right to do what THEY want with it. That includes keeping the public who tries to use it, and neighbors living near it, in a constant state of danger from unsafe, overgrown, tree covered  embankments.

And this also comes from a group who's members complain about getting hit by a bicycle when they walked on the Canal Trail, AFTER DARK, when it is supposed to be closed.... It's a Dawn to Dusk Opening for the Empire State Trail System folks.

Wear a headlamp... $2.49 at Harbor Freight. Better yet, stay off the trail after dark, when it's supposed to be closed, Erie Canal Neighbors will thank you.

It appears that this impromptu announcement, by the Head of NYPA, was made AFTER a statements came out of the last NYSCC & NYPA Public Meeting where Deputy Director DAVE MELLEN spoke at length about 2021 Canal Schedules and current ongoing Winter Maintenance work.

Apparently Mr. Mellen's statements didn't sit well with some attending that meeting, including his Boss, Mr. Q.

For those keeping score, this is the same Dave Mellen who claimed that Erie Canal Neighbors in the Brockport area were in danger from high-hazard, unsafe, earthen canal embankments back in late 2017. And the same person who promised those same Brockport neighbors along the canal embankments, that they would have their privacy & security restored, with a natural screening barrier that would be planted sometime in 2019-2020.

Many of those Erie Canal Neighbors believed Mr. Mellen, which in hindsight seems to have been just a ploy by the NYS Canal Corporation to silence opposition to their embankment work.

And still to this day those same neighbors have NO privacy screening barrier planted between the Empire Trail "pedestrians" and have had their lives and properties overrun by the "Reimagined Erie Canal"
