What a hoot, and if you believe what's stated in this video... you need professional help.

You have a choice folks...

You can believe the "outlandish ramblings" of a NYS Canal Property & Trail PATRON about safety of Erie Canal Earthen Embankments and what's needed to remedy the public safety nightmare that the Erie Canal has become.

That is someone with NO history owning or maintaining any Earthen Embankments, and little to NO understanding of what is required for Embankment Dam Safety... and someone who has stated there is nothing wrong with the Canal System, despite recent embankment failures in 3 different locations on the Canal System, that are still being repaired.

https://youtu.be/uaQmEmIn25o

Or you have the choice to believe the actual OWNERS of the NYS Canal System & property, who swore an OATH to protect the residents of New York State, and are trying to keep that promise by correcting a long standing safety issue with the aging Erie Canal.

A NYS AGENCY with a long history of understanding  water impoundments, and what's needed to maintain public safety in and around impounded water.

They are called the NY State Canal Corporation and their parent, the NY Power Authority, who jointly own and operate many earthen dams in NY State.

https://youtu.be/s5wXVUZq690

Choose wisely... or you will end up like this Facebook Group, who can't accept that "some trees are bad" and now are looking like fools, trying to protect trees on unsafe Earthen Embankments that are the "root" of the problem

And you may end up like the group's LEADERS, Ms Maier, & Ms Agte, who operate this Facebook Group and still to this day will not heed the warnings from the NYS canal Corporation about Unsafe, Hazardous Earthen Embankments in their own community

https://youtu.be/bbuJ31xvoOA

Just a note, anyone stating that "utter destruction and increased global warming" will result from performing typical earthen dam maintenance along the Erie Canal, may not be accurately describing the situation at hand.

From 2018-2020 about 27 miles of Canal Embankments were refurbished to a "like new" state. The Neighbors here have plenty of oxygen without these trees, there was no utter destruction, and it's preposterous to believe this Embankment work had any impact on the global climate.

Ms Maier perhaps is trying to hype this situation just a bit, pleading with her contingent group on Facebook to help her "save face"... Call or write your local legislators.

And tell them what?

That Ginny Maier doesn't like something being done, that will make the NYS Canal System safer, removing danger trees.

Really? Maybe instead it's time to Ginny exactly what she needs to hear folks...She is WRONG.

The diagram Maier uses is simply not representative of our dam.
Here is a more realistic diagram of the actual embankment DAM.

Note the steepness of the slope.

The outboard slope should be much less steep, a 3:1 ratio of base to toe , and base to crest.

The trees are extremely large, some 150 feet tall. The wind puts great leverage on the roots, and blowdowns are common.
It is impossible to get machinery in to quell any breech.

Check out the slope opposite the Oxbow and ask yourself -
   a. Can I walk down the slope?
   b. Can a backhoe get down here to effect a repair?
   c. Can anyone conduct an inspection for leaks with the current undergrowth?

Here's an email from a canal-side neighbor.

Mike, I just did a quick search, didn't read the entire article, but the link below may suggest grass can be more beneficial than trees in some cases. Grass is also great for over-topping and is perfect for dispersing water. Deer, rabbits, bees, butterflies- all benefit from these linear grasslands/clover patches. They can dissipate seepage from the embankments as well.  These people need the facts before spewing ideas that lead to lawsuits from our town officials- who refuse to do their own research before misrepresenting our community.

https://www.earth.com/news/trees-grass-carbon-sink/

The most ridiculous statement was that these trees haven't led to one single breach in 100 years. How does she know this? I highly doubt in an emergency to patch a breach that this underfunded Canal Corporation did a thorough investigation of what caused many thousands of leaks over the past 100 years. I guarantee some were caused by uprooting trees. After 50 or more years of neglect, the CC finally has the money and resources to do something, which is why this program is so intense and invasive. It's an emergency situation!

Also, they complain about the number of pages in these documents they can't seem to make sense of. Isn't this what they forced the Canal Corporation to do with thousands of our taxpayer dollars? Full disclosure, transparency and detailed information! Seems like they are skipping over a lot of these words and extremely basic laws of physics and trying to find illustrations or drawings they can visually understand. They obviously can't and should pay to hire their own interpreters/professional Engineers to explain things to them. Even then, they will find fault and refuse to accept the facts.

This woman is just another pawn who was misled and provoked. The redundancy in the STCC and their supporter's misleading campaign needs to be ignored by the CC, our legislators and anyone who cares about preserving our historic waterway and the millions of gallons of diverted water it contains.

A little more from our neighbor!

I'm basically responding to your emails and by now, figure we have a closed loop in our communication. Feel free to copy and paste or rewrite my comments. Liz has control of my neighborhood, so I don't need anymore aggravation from her- as she passes my house multiple times a day, stopping every person she sees to get them on her side.

I do send notes to the Canal Corp here and there slamming Liz's fake campaign. They got an earful about the history of how this whole STCC thing got started and that this is a one woman fight. Smoke and mirrors, misleading the public and abuse of social media. I really painted a clear picture of how the CC, our news media, town officials and tree huggers got duped into believing the CC is corrupt.

I've also pointed out the fact that the STCC has lost sight of the embankment fight and is slamming the CC for every single thing they do- including the reimagine contest, the recent breach in Palmyra...

If I took the time to look into the STCC page, I'm sure I'd find a pile of information that would result in the dismissal of these bully's desire to interfere with the Canal Corp's embankment rehabilitation.

Mrs Agte is playing with fire! In this case- millions of gallons of contained water in a leaky container made of dirt.

This statement bout Elizabeth Agte seems worrysome, "she has control of my neighborhood", perhaps a bit like a dictator would?

They both seem intent on spreading false propaganda, trying to convince smart people to follow "not so smart" leadership. And always a message that is contrary to what is considered the truth, and usually NOT what's best for all people involved... After all its always about "themselves"

And "stopping every person she sees to get them on "her side"... the problem is that her side doesn't fall on the same side of public safety and the safety of Perinton Residents living below large hazard filled embankments  like the Oxbow Lake Dam.

Because in the end Ms. Agte will say she is "always right".

Even in the shadow of the mountain-sized stack of evidence, proving she is very wrong about Erie Canal Earthen Embankments and their safety.

Look no further than the EEIP Guidebook, the Brockport Flood Inundation Maps, the SEQR Enviromental  Impact Study done for EEIP. The data & facts speak for themselves.

And weanwhile, Agte, Maier and the Facebook Group they run, offer only "their valued opinions" and nothing more...

They just don't like what public safety looks like along a 200 year old Erie Canal...in the 21st century.

In fact, these "intelligent" leaders of this group say there are "too many pages" in the EEIP Embankment  Guidebook, and the information  provided is too hard to understand. Really? And people still want to listen to these two when it comes to public safety around earthen dams?

Why are Perinton Government elected officials not speaking up and protecting Town residents from this misinformation campaign?

Why aren't Perinton Residents speaking up about this blight in their midst?

Complicity is a terrible thing, and there are way too many suffering from this malady in Perinton.

I guess the 600+ members aren't getting Ms Maier's message, or perhaps they've seen the light and pulled their heads out of the sand?

Only FOUR likes?
And one of them was MS Maier's husband I think.  Ms Agte gave a like (no surprise there) and our old stalwart pal Janice Gouldthorpe added her name. (no surprise there either) So who's  Michael Steven? A newbie on the scene?

It is a real surprise  - only ONE member gave a Facebook like so far?  It's sad!   But I dare say, bringing this to the groups attention might swell the likes numbers?  I guess the STCC isn't the driving force it's been made out to be!  Another lie spread by the founder of this group.

The only thing missing from that picture, signs on their backsides that say "Kick Me".

Have to agree with the "head in the sand" thought, both residents and especially the local village governments..who should know better.

I suppose I just expect a little more from "elected officials", who supposedly swear an Oath of Office as a NYS Employee.

Allowing a Facebook group to minimize the DANGER of hazardous earthen canal embankments, by creating a pseudo-environmental concern about shade & ozone layers, and leaving tens of thousands of Perinton residents in Flood Inundation Areas sixty feet below the canal flood level, seems like it is NOT in the best interest of residents, nor does it insure their safety.

At least the many Village & Town officials, west of Rochester, understood the basic principle that you can't allow the public you serve, to REMAIN in danger, once another STATE AGENCY informs you of that possible, impending danger.

I guess out west of Rochester, many town & village residents are use to local governments that really follow the "for the people, by the people" idea... And protecting the people from floods falls under the "for" clause.

Science & Data are respected...along with placing the task related to Dam Safety, in the HANDS of the owners of the DAMS, not those who simply walk along the crest of it on a trail.

A bit different than what Perinton & Fairport are doing. It seems that "the people" in your area are NOT considering safety as a priority, and science/fact...well that is found on Facebook for most.
