Embankment Sinkhole or Dangerous Animal Burrow? - You Decide

If you haven't seen this NYS Canal Notice regarding a recently found SINKHOLE along the Canal Trail & Embankment read this post on it from the NYS Canal Corporation:
https://ecna.createaforum.com/notices-from-the-canal-authority/notice-to-trail-users-detour-on-empire-erie-canal-trail-due-to-royalton-ny-sinkh/msg1823/?topicseen#msg1823
Here's a picture of the area that has the Trail closed, and the HOLE in the DAM that has the NYS Canal Corporation very concerned.
Of course the ECNA has learned that it may not be a sinkhole at all, could be an animal burrow according to some in the area. So we sent our investigative team out to take a look and try to get some pictures. After all, it's a well known fact that burrowing critters do cause issues on earthen dams, quite often, and have been the cause of past Erie Canal breaches.
After spending a little time near the hole, and waiting with a bit of patience, we saw this furry thing emerge.
It was terrifying to say the least.
We were unsure what it was, but it seemed to pose a danger to the canal, just by it's presence. We waited just a little while longer, hoping that the creature would emerge, and maybe we could see exactly what it was. It was certainly a danger to the Canalway Embankments & Trail Safety, and after a little coaxing, including throwing a few pieces of bait at the beast... it did finally emerge.
At first it reminded us of that famous Groundhog in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil.
But as it rose out of the sinkhole, we realized it was only our own little danger to the NYS Canal System... 'Eerie Elizabeth'
Emerging ? For what reason? Hmmm?
Mystery Solved: it's just Eerie Elizabeth checking her shadow... 6 more weeks until chainsaws

The issue is that animal burrows are a major cause for Earthen Embankment Dam failures, throughout the Country.
Take a look at this video, which explains the problem with burrowing animals near water impoundments and how they are dealt with.
