In his recent post to the STCC Facebook page he states "we carried the day in part with expert testimony from a recognized slope stability engineer at the University of Michigan, to the effect that trees on embankments not only do no harm to the stability of structures, they enhance them, because their root systems help to hold the earthen banks together."
Now Mr. Smith knows full well that Prof Donald Gray made a statement to the ECNA which refuted his testimony.
Here is the full story https://eriecanalfacts.wordpress.com/2018/04/19/testimony-in-question-vegetation-on-dams/
In summary Prof Gray said "I don’t know of any earth dams where woody vegetation was purposely planted or allowed to grow on a face of the dam. Such is not the case with earthen levees where vegetation can often be found growing on both the landward and water sides."
And Mr. Smith knows full well that the STCC leaders Agte & Maier conned Gray into thinking they were discussing 'wooded slopes' not earthen embankment dams.
I had to chuckle at his brash statement, "There is no public need for clear cutting" Sort of flies in the face of all the experts, like FEMA, ASDSO, USACE and NYDEC - including their expert from Michigan Donald Gray.
But then, Bill knows best, doesn't he?
