Miss Agte said, "This really is a good step forward to show that they care about the integrity of the canal and that it's not just a burden."

I have to ask, when ever did the NYPA show that they did not care about the integrity of the canal? They have been trying desperately to remedy the lack of care and maintenance by the NYTA that has left this facility in a deplorable state, and have been harassed and delayed by the the STCC (Stop The Clear Cut) when all other government departments have been telling them that the only thing allowed to grow on an earthen embankment dam is GRASS.

The STCC has wriggled away, trying to justify their position of leaving all this vegetation on the embankments, saying, it's good for oxygen, squirrels, shade and a host of other totally irrelevant excuses. They have not even acknowledged that most of the vegetation on these embankments is classified as weeds, prohibited, or controlled by NYDEC & FEMA. They have not once acknowledged there is a serious safety problem on the canal, caused primarily by the inability to carry out adequate inspections because of the dense undergrowth.

Thankfully, the NYPA has had the foresight to head this sort of action off in the future, and will comply with the SEQR requirement for the entire canal system.

The only vegetation on the canal embankments will be GRASS! Work will start in 2019. In the meantime, residents living under these dams need to be vigilant and be aware that in their current condition, with a lack of adequate inspections due to excessive vegetation, these dams are dangerous.

The best & easiest way to see issues on Embankment Dams is by having a simple uniform covering called GRASS that makes inspection & detection of safety issues BEFORE the become a catastrophic flood event.

Stop the Clear Cut is not only fighting AGAINST a much needed Safety Project they also don't understand WHY people use clear cutting as a "tool" to improve the overall earth forest by REMOVING bad species and allowing a fresh start. This canal clear cutting is CLEARING an Unsafe Embankment Dam. It's called Remediation and is common practice folks.

It's not about harvesting trees, it's about saving the public from possible flooding.

And the practice of CLEARING earthen embankment dams of Trees is the ONLY choice according to all of the experts, and the Department of Environmental Conservation in just about EVERY state in our Country.

Again, STATEWIDE consensus from the MAIN agency to PRESERVE & CONSERVE the Environment states very clearly the truth about Trees on Embankment Dams

If anyone claims that keeping trees on Embankment Dam is "better for the environment", they are only spreading misinformation and minimizing the entire issue of public safety around these water impounding structures. There is not one recognized hydrology expert, nor any State DEC agency of Dam Expert that would agree with that statement. In fact, the OPPOSITE is true, Trees on Dams Kill People
