Trees intentionally planted on the crest of the dam.

I have to ask, who exactly 'planted' these trees? Was it the town/village of Pittsford?
Did they get permission to dig holes in an embankment dam?

I doubt it!  Lets ask the NYPA!

The reply was that these trees aren't likely to be cut down as the embankment there is very wide and will sustain them. No mention of who actually planted them.

I am not sure it matters WHO planted these trees, they were placed in an area that does NOT allow deep rooting trees like these Maple Trees. The trees shown along the canal. in that picture, will reach a height of 60-80 feet eventually, which will be a problem down the line. If the Town or Village planted them, they should have sought permission BEFORE they invested Taxpayer Dollars.

But more importantly, according to the new NYS Canal Corporation EEIP Guidebook (on Embankment Maintenance), these trees are in ZONE 2A, which is between the Empire Trail and the water's edge, and NO VEGETATION is allowed there.

But they may be kept, in a gesture of "good faith", but they should be removed, for the SAFETY of the SYSTEM and the safety of the Public living below.. Not my words.. just take a look

I took the Earthen Dam Embankment Zone Map, from the EEIP Guidebook, and married it with the Vegetation Management Plan from the NYS Canal Program and have updated the Dam Zone Map. to reflect where vegetation is NOT ALLOWED and also where it might be allowed to stay, if it meets a strict set of requirements. The image below shows what the Plan on Record is...

So, Mr. Gallagher is CORRECT in his assumption that these trees could be removed as part of the new EEIP Program...

And that is EXACTLY what should happen if the SAFETY of Canal Communities or Neighbors is at risk from them, regardless of whether Mr. G agrees or not. It's not about this Facebook groups "fake claims" about shade or global warming that matters, its the TRUTH about Earthen Dam Safety along the Erie Canal.

The Canal Corp representative told me they would NOT be cutting these trees down.

And my words specifically...

I'm going to start a Facebook Group: Start Cutting Canal Trees...SCCT. The first rally will be in Pittsford.
